Desafio means defiance in Portuguese, this series is inspired by the late artist Paula Rego (1935 – 2022) and the film Dune (2021).
Rego, a Portuguese figurative artist, bravely expressed feminist ideals under Salazar’s repressive regime (1934-1965).
Her paintings portrayed strong female figures that did not conform to typical beauty standards and also represented their tremendous suffering.
The strength of the Pro-abortion paintings and the fairy tale style in which some of the stories are shown, were particularly fascinating, together with the sense of darkness and rebellion.
Influences are also the use of militaristic styles and the matriarchal society represented in the world of the Dune novels and the 1984/2021 films.
The collection has strong shapes and a utilitarian feel. The style is futuristic, with eclectic and elegant garments.
